(The Wall Painting Cycle on the Sciences and Arts in the Cathedral Cloister of Brandenburg an der Havel)

This richly illustrated book is the first to comprehensively explain the results of a major restoration research project dealing with the late Gothic mural painting cycle on the sciences and arts in the Cathedral cloister in Brandenburg an der Havel. Praised as "magnificent paintings" in the mid-15th century, the paintings have survived only in fragments. Their iconographic and art-historical classification and the communication to an interested public are therefore particularly challenging.

For this purpose, an innovative method for visualising the painting fragments was developed as a combined application of several radiation-diagnostic and imaging procedures. The interdisciplinary evaluation and interpretation of the visualisations - based on technical painting findings and art-historical comparisons - now makes it possible to experience the original painting again. The approach with largely non-invasive examination techniques can be generally applied to fragmentary wall painting.
