Aus Rot wird Schwarz – und dann? Pigmentveränderungen an Kunst- und Kulturgut (Red Becomes Black - and Then What? Pigment Changes on Art and Cultural Heritage)
The subject of pigment changes in paint in paintings and settings is of great importance to all everyday conservation work, as pigment changes can fundamentally alter the original colour effect of a painting or mounting, and thus massively affect the artistic message. For example, the pigment red lead can change to lead oxide, turning formerly bright red areas brown or black. In extreme cases, pigment changes can lead to fading or almost complete loss of colour. Reconversion is only possible in very rare cases and is ethically questionable. How do conservators deal with this problem? This volume focusses on material science analysis and how restorers deal with the changes.
All essays are in German, but the numerous detailed photos and graphics provide a good insight into the research results.
