1000 Jahre St. Michael in Hildesheim. Kirche – Kloster – Stifter (1000 Years St. Michael's in Hildesheim. Church - Monastery - Founders)
St. Michael's in Hildesheim is one of the most important medieval church buildings in Germany and is part of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage. To mark the 1000th anniversary of the church, the Hornemann Institute of the HAWK University of Applied Sciences and Arts Hildesheim/Holzminden/ Göttingen organised an international conference from 16 to 18 September 2010 under the patronage of the German UNESCO Commission. The 24 contributions from the disciplines of art history, (ecclesiastical) history, archaeology, architecture and conservation published in this book open up fascinating insights into the eventful 1000-year history of the monastery with vivid texts and many high-quality pictures.
One focus is on the Hildesheim Bishop Bernward, canonised in 1192, the educator of Emperor Otto III, and his foundation activities, which were unprecedented for this era, including the St Michael's Monastery. Other essays are devoted to the later development of church and monastery, including the reform in the 15th century, the Reformation, the baroque monastic culture up to the destruction in 1945 and the reconstruction.
All essays are in German, but the numerous detailed illustrations provide a good insight into the research results.
