Works of art and cultural monuments are usually handed down in fragments. Dealing with fragments is therefore one of the central tasks of heritage conservation, museums and libraries. With digital technologies, we are treading innovative paths for researching, preserving, presenting and communicating the fragmentary. In view of this rapidly growing importance of digitisation in the field of cultural heritage, it is important to place the fascinating possibilities of virtual reconstructions on solid scientific and ethical foundations and to emphasise the irreplaceability of the fragmentary original. The richly illustrated conference proceedings offer an interdisciplinary overview of this essential topic, from the treatment of fragmentary works throughout history to the perception of the fragment from a psychological perspective and the impact of artificial intelligence on its acceptance. A broad spectrum of projects from archaeology, heritage conservation and collections will present the use of different methods and techniques of digitisation and their objectives. A special focus is on the theoretical principles of dealing with fragments and their significance for our actions today.
