(Medieval town halls in Lower Saxony and Bremen)
Historic town halls with their ornate facades and state rooms tell a lot about the history of their town from the Middle Ages to the recent past. They are living monuments that have preserved some of their original functions to the present day. It is often difficult for visitors to these town halls to recognize and understand the surviving inventory in all its complexity. This lavishly illustrated volume aims to sharpen the view of this for the first time. The book focuses on ten important medieval town halls in Lower Saxony and Bremen. The book explains their urban location, their architecture, their architectural decoration and their rich furnishings as evidence of municipal self-confidence and the political ideals of their creators. Special attention is paid to the treatment of the buildings and their furnishings in the 19th and 20th centuries, which decisively shaped their appearance today.
