(The Cloister of St. Michael in Hildesheim - 1000 Years of Cultural History in Stone)
The UNESCO World Heritage Site of St. Michael in Hildesheim is famous worldwide as a highlight of Ottonian architecture. However, the cloister belonging to the former Benedictine monastery has remained rather unnoticed. Acute conservation problems brought together a group of researchers from various disciplines who meticulously examined its existing part and brought to light much that was previously unknown. Through these findings, published here for the first time, about the history of construction and art, previous restorations, former coloration, material inventory and condition, the structure appears in a new light. The latest findings not only form the basis for the careful preservation and maintenance of this outstanding architectural creation, but also offer innovative solutions for the preservation of other architectural monuments for future generations.
