The Examination of Transparent Coatings on Furniture and Wooden Objects
The translation of the course has been updated.
Transparent coatings play a crucial role in protecting and enhancing the appearance of historical and modern furniture and other wooden objects. Analysing these coatings provides valuable information about their age, origin, the materials used, and any previous restoration work. Modern analytical methods support the identification and characterisation of different coatings and help to assess their state of preservation.
Course Content
This course emphasizes a practical approach to coatings examination, from overall inspection techniques to spot analysis. By combining scientific and art historical methods, a comprehensive understanding of the significance and treatment of transparent coatings is achieved.
The course covers:
- observation with visible and ultraviolet light
- solubility tests
- examination of cross-sections
- microchemical tests
- histochemical staining methods
Useful tips are provided for the use of specific equipment and facilities. Health and safety issues are also addressed. In addition, the course conveys fundamental information about the primary materials used in different types of coatings, their chemical and physical properties, as well as factors influencing deterioration and surface phenomena. With the help of detailed explanation of the basic information, it is also possible to learners with little previous knowledge to get into the subject. During the term of the course, a graduated conservator is available to all participants via e-mail.
The Modules
- The first module introduces you to raw materials and the different types of coatings and their manufacturing techniques.
- The second module discusses the effects of atmospheric, anthropogenic, biogenic and technical influences on transparent coatings.
- The third module covers the surface analysis of treated furniture and wood. Here, you will learn about various radiation techniques and solubility testing.
- The final module covers point analysis of treated furniture and wood surfaces. You will find more specific information about optical aids, sampling methods, preparation techniques and evaluation.
